Who is Kodo Nishimura?
Named a Next Generation Leader by Time Magazine, Kodo Nishimura is a Buddhist monk based in Tokyo, LGBTQIA+ activist, and celebrity makeup artist for Miss Universe and Miss USA beauty queens. Educated at New York's prestigious Parsons School of Design, Nishimura has appeared on Queer Eye and is the author of the acclaimed memoir This Monk Wears Heels: Be Who You Are, a moving story of self-love and positivity with modern perspectives into Buddhist teachings. Nishimura shares his journey of sexuality, body affirmation, and healing, reshaping the traditional paradigms of Buddhism.
Dr. Mark Dennis (Religion) and Dr. Ben Hiramatsu Ireland (Modern Language Studies) will introduce the documentary with brief remarks about queer(ing) Buddhism and LGBTQIA+ movements in Japan.
