Utopian Bloom

Payton Huebner

BFA Studio Art Thesis Exhibition

Moudy Gallery

April 13 – 21, 2022

Reception: Wednesday, April 13, 5-7pm

Utopian Bloom is inspired by my personal safe haven, better known as Gramma & Grampa’s. Their home is the epitome of a bed and breakfast, both peaceful and lively.  Similarly, to how they have nurtured me throughout my childhood, they also spend their time bringing their backyard to life. Their gardening simultaneously creates a beautiful scene and an environment for all living things hidden behind plant pots and overgrown flower beds. After stepping down the porch stairs and taking many weaving paths, there is an instant connection to nature. Flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping, critters are crawling, and I am immersed in nature’s utopia.

In my work, I seek to share this experience through my paintings, drawings, and ceramic pieces. My oil paintings are a representation of their charming home and I incorporate bright saturated colors to reflect the presence of life radiating throughout the garden. The paintings range from six-inch tondos to paintings that are equivalent to my height. My graphite drawings uncover the creatures found in each curious glance. The backgrounds are left blank to isolate them from their hiding places and produce more of a snapshot affect. My ceramic pieces are a variation of plant pots that you might find around every corner, holding a plethora of plant species. Some are left plain while others are decorated to connect with my other mediums.
