The MFA Thesis Exhibition by TCU Painting Graduate Student Corrie Thompson
Moudy Gallery, Texas Christian University
March 24 - 30, 2022
Opening reception, Friday, March 25, 5-7 pm
The Art Galleries at TCU presents Pillar of Salt, Corrie Thompson’s MFA thesis exhibition. Pillar of Salt will be on view from March 24-30, 2022, with an opening reception March 25th, from 5-7 p.m. The artist will also be available in the gallery on March 26th from 3-5 pm for FWADA’s Spring Gallery Night.
In Pillar of Salt, Thompson delves into events and cycles from her maternal family’s missionary history. She untangles this history by repeating a litany of actions: marking, erasing, cutting, stitching, sorting, packing. Drawings, textiles, and video all constitute an emotional return to the places that formed her, while revealing a perspective of removal, or betweenness.
Thompson identifies the generational narrative of love and trauma that formed the environment of her upbringing, an environment that is also contextualized by global currents of patriarchy and colonialism. She aligns her practice with that of contemporary artists who subvert systemic gender confines through textile, enriching and interrogating her own position in a domestic lineage through historically sourced sewing practices.
Images of ruin function as metaphors for personal, familial, or cultural loss. At the same time, disparate parts become whole in many materials and media - the surface of a quilt, the pages of a book, and the confines of a box - suggesting reconciliation, or potential for it.
Corrie Thompson makes drawings, books, and textiles that explore tensions between identity and loss. Thompson grew up between the United States, Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea, and currently lives in Fort Worth, Texas where she is a Master of Fine Arts candidate in Painting at Texas Christian University. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art at North Park University in Chicago, Illinois in 2013. Her work has recently been exhibited at Moncrief Cancer Institute, PRP Gallery, and Fort Worth Contemporary Arts, and she has upcoming shows at Blind Alley and Arts Fort Worth.
