DESCRIPTION:Pillar of Salt\n\nThe MFA Thesis Exhibition by TCU Painting Gra
duate Student Corrie Thompson\n\n \n\nMoudy Gallery\, Texas Christian Unive
 rsity\n\n March 24 - 30\, 2022\n\nOpening reception\, Friday\, March 25\, 5
-7 pm\n\n \n\n \n\nThe Art Galleries at TCU presents Pillar of Salt\, Corri
e Thompson’s MFA thesis exhibition. Pillar of Salt will be on view from Mar
ch 24-30\, 2022\, with an opening reception March 25th\, from 5-7 p.m. The
artist will also be available in the gallery on March 26th from 3-5 pm for
FWADA’s Spring Gallery Night.\n\nIn Pillar of Salt\, Thompson delves into e
vents and cycles from her maternal family’s missionary history. She untangl
es this history by repeating a litany of actions: marking\, erasing\, cutti
 ng\, stitching\, sorting\, packing. Drawings\, textiles\, and video all con
stitute an emotional return to the places that formed her\, while revealing
  a perspective of removal\, or betweenness.\n\n \n\nThompson identifies the
generational narrative of love and trauma that formed the environment of h
er upbringing\, an environment that is also contextualized by global curren
ts of patriarchy and colonialism. She aligns her practice with that of cont
emporary artists who subvert systemic gender confines through textile\, enr
iching and interrogating her own position in a domestic lineage through his
torically sourced sewing practices. \n\n \n\nImages of ruin function as met
aphors for personal\, familial\, or cultural loss. At the same time\, dispa
rate parts become whole in many materials and media - the surface of a quil
t\, the pages of a book\, and the confines of a box - suggesting reconcilia
tion\, or potential for it. \n\n \n\nCorrie Thompson makes drawings\, books
\, and textiles that explore tensions between identity and loss. Thompson g
rew up between the United States\, Solomon Islands\, and Papua New Guinea\,
and currently lives in Fort Worth\, Texas where she is a Master of Fine Ar
ts candidate in Painting at Texas Christian University. She received her Ba
chelor of Arts in Studio Art at North Park University in Chicago\, Illinois
in 2013. Her work has recently been exhibited at Moncrief Cancer Institute
\, PRP Gallery\, and Fort Worth Contemporary Arts\, and she has upcoming sh
