Creating Rubrics for Assessment & Feedback

Rubrics are valuable tools in teaching and learning. Rubrics can help clarify activity directions, ensure that activities align with skills articulated in the course learning outcomes, identify goals and priorities in completing course activities, and establish evaluation standards that streamline the grading process as well as help provide an explanation for grades earned.

This hands-on workshop will discuss best practices for the use of rubrics, examine different types of rubrics, and provide time to begin the process of developing rubrics of your own.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Identify the components of a well-written rubric.
  • Evaluate what type of rubric works best for a given activity.
  • Correlate the course learning outcomes associated with the activity to feedback you wish to provide.
  • Draft a rubric for an activity within your course.

This workshop meets Koehler Center Outcomes 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and 2.1.Koehler Center Outcomes 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and 2.1
