Opening Reception: Thursday, March 17th, 5:00 - 7:00 PM
The Art Galleries at TCU presents FOLLY, MFA Thesis Exhibition by Doug Land. FOLLYwill be on view at Moudy Gallery from March 14th–19th , 2022, with an opening reception on Thursday March 17th, from 5-7pm.
Through an immersive installation, Dallas area artist Doug Land. transforms the gallery space into a temple of FOLLY to illuminate the relationships between us humans and the world around us. Land.’s art practice unpacks the uncomfortable exploration of melancholy experiences through the lens of gardening. The artist indicates: “For me, the act of gardening is a devotional challenge, forcing me to confront notions of beauty, wealth, class, even death. Using the garden as my muse, allows me to present the bitter truths of my introspections in pleasant, but ultimately ruining forms. Building site-specific installations, both indoors and outdoors, I highlight our strange sense of societal values tied to our codependent relationship with Nature.” In FOLLY, Land. uses cloth, wax, neon, and charred wood to create a unique installation that explores the notions of our ruinous folly and our role to change it.
Doug Land. was raised in the woods south of Dallas. He received a BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design. This thesis exhibition is the culmination of his sculpture studies for his MFA at Texas Christian University.
