How do you know if students have connected with course content on a given day? By the time you give an exam or collect a paper, it's often too late to correct misconceptions or misunderstandings. Strategies introduced in this workshop will help you regularly check student understanding and provide students with specific and timely feedback. These strategies require a small amount of effort to prepare, are flexible and easy to implement, and use little class time. Use of these strategies will provide you with insight to help guide and adjust instruction, and will help students focus on learning priorities and identify strengths and weaknesses.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Gather feedback to scaffold student learning based on students' prior knowledge.
  • Elicit evidence of student understanding to help monitor progress and performance.
  • Utilize strategies to improve students' metacognition.
  • Articulate the importance of specific and timely feedback in order to improve student learning.

This workshop meets Koehler Center outcomes 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, and 2.2.
