Fernando Alvarez: Everything Must Go!

The MFA Thesis Exhibition by TCU Painting Graduate Student Fernando Alvarez

Moudy Gallery, Texas Christian University

 February 24 - March 4, 2022

Opening reception, Thursday, February 24, 5-7 pm

The Art Galleries at TCU presents Everything Must Go!, Fernando Alvarez’s’ MFA Thesis Exhibition.  Everything Must Go! will be on view at Moudy Gallery from February 24th to March 4th, 2022, with an opening reception on Thursday, February 24th, from 5-7pm. In step with Texas Christian University’s Covid-19 protocols we ask that all visitors wear a mask while in the gallery and maintain social distance from other visitors.

Everything Must Go! features work that confronts ideas of paranoia, surveillance, and violence, as they relate to the conditions of the artists’ displacement from his home country of Honduras. The body of work exhibited consists of text-based paintings, objects, and videos; most of which are assisted by shipping materials, like plastic and plywood. The work is often presented humorously in order to make the difficult, or uncomfortable, more accessible. A nuanced approach to language helps guide this quest; often co-opting American idioms and other well-known references to speak about vulnerable inner conflicts centered around unresolved past experiences. Everything Must Go! represents the latest installment in Alvarez’s investigation into the intersections between his family, national, and cultural history.

Honduran artist Fernando Alvarez received his BFA in Drawing & Painting from the University of North Texas in 2014. Past exhibitions include the Annual Rising Star Exhibition at Turner House, and collaborative exhibition can ción de tiem po at Browder Street Gallery. Instagram: @fjac_art
