Join Valerie Steele, Ph.D., director and chief curator of the Museum at the Fashion institute of Technology for a survey of the past 150 years of fashion history — from about 1870 to the present.

You’ll learn:

  • Some of the reasons why fashion changed and when and how it did (for example, why hemlines rose and corsets were replaced by brassieres).
  • How world historical events, changes in lifestyle, changes in the fashion system impacted fashion and design.
  • How great designers, such as Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel have influenced fashion.
  • About defining moments in fashion history, such as Dior's New Look and the development of unisex styles.

Reception before the event at 5:30 p.m.
