Hip Hop Symposium
This contemplated Hip Hop Symposium is a dynamic intellectual and entertaining exercise. Organized primarily by students of HNRS 20623 with support from TCU IdeaFactory, this event will be offered at Erma Lowe Hall Studio B, Tuesday, April 23, 2019. A principal goal of the Symposium is to provide attendees with concrete, practical exposure to the intellectual, cultural, social significance of Hip Hop within mainstream society.
This Symposium will challenge anti-intellectualist impulses to criticize Hip Hop as devoid of higher-order value (i.e., often, Hip Hop gets a “bad rap”). While we do not posit that Hip Hop is above criticism, we endeavor to explore the genre as an effective means to elevate marginalized voices and articulate intimate personal expressions. In the process, attendees will be introduced to some of the most politically astute and conscious purveyors of possibility.
The 1-day Symposium will demonstrate that Hip Hop in its purest form is a very valuable, creative and inspirational art form that is deceptively complex, philosophical and undoubtedly higher order in origin and execution. Attendees will be consistently exposed to the idea that Hip Hop is a powerful, poignant and poetic expression of the human quest for dignity and respect.
