View map Free EventThe Art Galleries at TCU in collaboration with TCU’s AddRan College of Liberal Arts are pleased to present Moche Art: Between Life and Afterlife, guest curated by Sofía Pichardo, a Master of Arts student in Latin American History at Texas Christian University. The exhibition runs at Moudy Gallery August 19 – September 12, 2024 with a reception on Wednesday, August 21, 5-8pm.
Moche Art: Between Life and Afterlife presents a selection of Moche objects from the Moorehead Collection, which forms part of Texas Christian University's Permanent Art Collection. Moche culture developed between 1 C.E. to 900 C.E. in the North Coast valleys of what is today Peru. The artifacts in this exhibition are predominantly painted pottery that visually manifest Moche cultural traditions and help to explain Moche religious ideologies, and relations with nature and human body. This exhibit will transform Moudy Gallery into an ethnographic space to historicize Moche sculptures for the first time at Texas Christian University.
The exhibition interprets the history behind the pottery, giving special relevance to the craftsmanship and provenance of these artifacts. Through Moche Art, contemporary viewers can better understand how these ancient people viewed life and death, the body and nature, religion and fertility. Visitors to the gallery can explore Moche culture as a foundation of Peruvian identity today and consider the implications of artworks such as these leaving their country of origin.

She worked with Mexico’s Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente on cultural activities based on Wixárika cosmological beliefs while participating in a legal research project for the Regional Wixárika Committee for the Defense of Wirikuta. Pichardo created a sound installation for the exhibition Spiritual Art by Mathias Goeritz at Cabañas Museum in Guadalajara and later assisted curator Naomi Zaragoza in the Latin American House cultural activities in London.
