Self: The Physical and the Emotional

Self: The Physical and the Emotional

April 23 – 29, 2021

Project Space, TCU Moudy North, MNB (2805 South University Drive, Fort Worth, TX 76129)

Self: The Physical and the Emotional, which features a compelling group of artworks in a variety of media, showcases work by Marielis Conde Mendez, Payton Huebner, and Jonathen Wilks. The show runs from April 23 – 29, 2021.

The artists explore their identities through ceramics, drawing, painting, and sculpture. Their work uncovers their own definitions of self—shown physically and emotionally through cultural objects, personal places, and self-portraits.

Marielis Conde Mendez focuses on sharing and reflecting immigrants’ stories illustrating their shared struggles. Her use of color, subject, scale, and shape speaks specifically of her memory of Cuba, her home country. Payton Huebner’s abstract environmental paintings explore familial & intimate locations and reflect nurturing relationships. The use of cultivated plants is a metaphor for the circle of life. Jonathen Wilks uses self-portraiture to connect with the viewer in a deep and emotional manner. His self-analysis draws upon animated facial cues and body language while he seeks to represent the human figure with expressive realism.
