About this Event
View map Free EventThe Palo Duro Canyon is a Texas treasure. Rooted beneath the bold vistas of the nations ‘second largest canyon’ is a geologic story worthy of its grandeur. New discoveries from the Triassic rocks forming the canyon walls by TCU geology students and Professor John Holbrook reveal a story of colossal floods at the dawn of Mesozoic and modern life. Megamonsoonal storms crossing vast drylands of the Pandean supercontinent ~215 million years ago crashed into a still prominent Ouachita Mountain range, sending massive flash floods westward toward an ancient coast that would become the modern Pacific. New dating of the sandstones these floods left behind show this to also be the time for the emergence of dinosaurs, mammals, and birds. Please join Dr Holbrook to hear what mysteries Horned Frog research has uncovered from the red dirt of Texas.
