This conversation is both needed and significant because it will challenge anti-intellectualist impulses to criticize Hip Hop as devoid of higher-order value (i.e., often, Hip Hop gets a “bad rap”). Hence, this presentation/conversation will demonstrate that Hip Hop in its purest form is a very valuable, creative, and inspirational art form that is all at once, complex, philosophical, and aspirational given its historical roots to African American themes of liberation by its originators. An in-depth interview and live performance by Brooklyn artist Amari Mar will undoubtedly illustrate the Hip Hop genre to be a craft worthy of admiration and appreciation, just like its creators. Attendees will walk away with the inspiring idea that Hip Hop is a powerful, poignant, and poetic expression of the human quest for dignity and respect.
