About this Event
As part of the TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine’s month-long initiatives celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion will be hosting a virtual workshop showcasing real stories and paths to medicine from successful Latinx doctors in our community on Thursday, October 7th at 6:00pm. Please join us for an intimate evening with Dr. Adela S. Valdez, the first Latina administrator to serve at South Texas Hospital, Harlingen, TX, and Dr. Dora Martinez, Medical Director at Westbrook Clinic, as they present “Three generations – Paths to Medicine”, a journey into medicine through the eyes and experiences of three women of the same family.
It begins with Eloisa Garcia an 86-year-old woman who forged against many almost unsurmountable obstacles to successfully raise a family. Her life story in itself is a powerful testament to resiliency. Her daughter, Dr. Adela Valdez, UTRGV Associate Dean of Student Affairs, will share her journey to medical school that includes the struggles to leave the Rio Grande Valley and her decision to enter into a field where there were no role models. Mrs. Garcia’s granddaughter, Dr. Dora A. Martinez, Medical Director at Westbrook Clinic, will focus on how the role of women in medicine and the new generation of women physicians focus on work-life balance.
